A fantastic and striking piece, potentially manufactured in Germany or in the UK and dating back to as early as the 17th Century. The Armada Chest,, which may sometimes be known as a Nuremberg Chest or Strong Box, consists of a false lock to the front of the chest whilst having a hidden lock as associated mechanism fitted to the lid. When the lid is lifted, a hand etched detailed panel is exposed which shows a pair of birds surrounded by foliage. The functional locking mechanism is then hidden behind these panels. Even though the mechanism is functional, the locks do not engage on the surrounding structure to lock the lid in place as there is an exceptional amount of force required to turn the key and operate the mechanism which could then potentially snap the key. Within the chest is another secure compartment in the bottom left. A key is supplied for this compartment which does partially operate the lock, however, it doesn’t release the catch so is therefore currently locked and inaccessible.
There is of course some obvious marks, wear, rust and damage to the 400 year old chest, however, all of this adds character to the piece. As mentioned, 2 keys are supplied. The lid mechanism is operational but does not engage so can therefore be opened without a key, whereas the internal compartment is partially functional but does not unlock.
The chest measures 90cm L x 51cm D x 46cm H and weighs 110kg.
