A fine example of a late 19th century Victorian ebonised aesthetic movement folding card table, also serving as a console table. The table features a walnut-inlaid top that opens to reveal a green felt playing surface, which has been replaced at some point in the past. A drawer is cleverly incorporated into the design and can be accessed by sliding out the legs when converting it to a card table. When not in use, the piece folds neatly into a compact console table form.
The Thuya-inlaid top (similar to walnut) shows some light blemishes, marks and scratches, along with a small chip or strip of missing veneer (approx. 8 inches long, 5 mm wide) to the ebonised surround — this is black underneath and not immediately obvious to the eye. There is an historic repair to one leg. General knocks and marks are present, consistent with age and use.
When open, the table measures 89 cm wide by 97 cm long and 72 cm high. When closed, it measures 89 cm wide by 49 cm deep and 74 cm high. A versatile and elegant piece that blends the refined style of the aesthetic movement with practical functionality.
